Champurrado

Champurrado is a traditional Mexican hot beverage that combines elements of hot chocolate and atole, a warm masa-based drink. It is typically made by simmering water with chocolate, masa harina (corn flour), and sweeteners such as sugar or condensed milk. The result is a thick, creamy, and rich drink with a distinct chocolate flavor and a slightly gritty texture from the masa harina.

Champurrado is often enjoyed during festive occasions, particularly during the colder months or as a comforting treat on chilly evenings. It is frequently served alongside traditional Mexican pastries like tamales or pan dulce (sweet bread) for a cozy and indulgent experience.

Our goal at La Popular Maka Tlan isn’t always to stick to the usual “traditional way” of preparing our favorites. Living in the US, we lead busy lives, and we’ll always promote easier ways to cook things. If that’s not your style, ¡no hay problema! We are evolving and finding ways to make things easier.

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups of water
  • 4 cups of milk
  • I can condensed milk
  • 1/3 cup of Maseca flour
  • 1 chocolate tablet (we used Nestle Abuelita)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by warming up 5 cups of water in a kettle until it reaches a boil.
  2. Once the water is boiling, carefully pour it into a large pot.
  3. Next, unwrap a chocolate bar (such as Nestle Abuelita) and add it to the pot of boiling water.
  4. Open a can of condensed milk and pour it into the pot, stirring gently to combine all the ingredients.
  5. Measure 1/3 cup of maseca flour and slowly sprinkle it into the pot while stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  6. Allow the champurrado mixture to simmer over medium-low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  7. Once the champurrado is ready, pour into your favorite mug and serve hot.

For an extra indulgent touch, pair your champurrado with a freshly baked croissant to enjoy the perfect combination of flavors and textures.

Enjoy!
